Q. I have to find a job over the Christmas break if I want to have money in my pocket when I get back to campus. What do you think my chances are of finding one at the retail stores? I like that work and they seem to be busy then.

Ans. Your chance is as good as anyone else's if you present a pleasant appearance, act intelligent and polite, and bring references from past employers. The problem is there will be a long line at the employment office and you must do something to stand out. Start making contact right now, during a weekend home, or online and on the phone. The good news is that global outplacement consultancy, Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. thinks better-than-expected back-to-school sales may have lifted spirits of retailers somewhat and there's some hope in the industry that hiring may pick up.
