Don't offer unnecessary information

Q. I work several hours a week as a part-time employee for my local school district. Last year I asked them to employ me full-time and they refused because of budget constraints Although I don't get benefits, they did let me join their excellent insurance group at my own expense. I really need more income, and have accepted another part-time job in the neighborhood that won't interfere with this one. But I don't know if I should tell my district boss about it. Will he think it's disloyal?

Ans. Since you asked him to employ you full time and he refused, you have no choice but to fill in the salary and those hours elsewhere. No one can fault you for that. But there's no reason for you to march into his office and flaunt that. Too often most of us give too much unnecessary information. Keep you head down and do your work. If someone does hear about your second job and asks you about it, you can simply acknowledge that is true. Unless they ask you to work full time there's no reason to feel disloyal. After all, you may become so valuable to the other employer you'll get full time employment (with paid insurance) at that company.
