Holiday Hiring looking up

Q. Jobs are down, companies are cutting back on employees and I'm wondering if I'm even going to find a part- or full-time holiday job this year. Do you know how the retailers are feeling?

Ans. Without a crystal ball it's hard to tell, but indications are that there just MAY be a stronger seasonal hiring season this year. Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., outplacement consultants that track such things, notes that sales gains this fall provide just enough confidence to encourage the retailers to add holiday workers during the last three months of the year. Over the past two weeks Toys R Us, Macy's, Kohl's, and UPS announced they plan to do so. Challenger expects hiring to be better than 2009, though not as strong as the pre-recession year of 2007.
