Take Multi-tasking to Task

My boss, an older person, doesn't want us to use our personal phones, or check personal email while we're working on his projects, but I keep telling him that I'm perfectly capable of multi-tasking and can do my work while I keep track of my personal life without affecting its quality. I am right, am I not? All younger people do it.
Ans. Well, you shouldn't-and bosses should take multi-tasking to task. Career Management Consultant Elaine Varelas, managing partner of Keystone Partners concedes workers are tempted to always check personal emails and Facebook, etc., and she admits it's hard to break the habit. But you should. Varelas reports a study at the University of California noted multi-tasking affects the brain's learning systems, and, as a result, we do not learn as well when we are distracted. Even if you can learn while multi-tasking, that learning is less flexible and more specialized, so you cannot retrieve the information as easily. So shut off Facebook now and get back to work.
