How to survive while working for power people
If you work beside "powerful people" you learn pretty fast that they have two key traits: Brilliance and Drive.
Their individual visions are all-encompassing and they are tireless when it comes to reaching their goals - so much so that they may have little time or interest in helping you reach your goals.
There are three keys to getting what you want from the brilliant, driven person, believes Executive Coach Dirk Schlimm, author of Influencing Powerful People: Engage and Command the Attention of the Decision maker to Get What You Need to Succeed ;
Schlimm recommends three cardinal rules when dealing with and influencing powerful people to get what you want:
- Understand and appreciate what it is they are trying to accomplish - and more importantly, let them know that you understand this. Acknowledging this key dynamic of the relationship underscores that you are on board with the bigger picture, which is helping the powerful person to reach his or her vision. (Note, however, that this acknowledgement in no way negates or invalidates your own vision).
- Adapt to them. What you bring to the table has to be about them, not about you. Their goals have to be your consideration - always - but again, not to the exclusion of your own. Powerful people need people who don't need them back.
- Be yourself and maintain your personal integrity. This may mean consistently setting aside time for your top priorities, taking a digital detox from the office, or voicing your opinion when it needs to be heard.
Even if you don't work right alongside really powerful people, it's likely that you have powerful people in your day-to-day dealings that can benefit from your influence using these three approaches.
